GIVING OURSELVES A BREAK

When was the last time you gave yourself a break?

That's a good question, isn't it? Can you answer it without thinking too long?

It's so important to give ourselves not only a break mentally but also physically and emotionally.

Taking time out and just do whatever feels right, is a great feeling. But yet often we don't do it or we think we don't have the time. Giving my self a break from a hectic schedule is definitely something I've incorporated into my life in the last few months. I think it is so important for our happiness levels to have that quiet time. That can mean just sitting down, listening to your favourite song and enjoy a cup of tea, or listening to your breath. Sometimes it might be going for a walk in the park and watch the dogs playing in the fields. In general, I think its good for anyone to just step back and feel gratitude for what you have right now and remember that once in a while. To tune into ourselves, will never be a time that is wasted.

Here are some little tips and tricks of how I’ve included this into my life:

Connecting with your breath is a method for being present. When you concentrate on each aspect of the breathing process, you are present; you let go of the past and future and are focused on the moment inside the breath. This is why breathing consciously is its own meditation.

Breathing consciously has a biological effect on our mental, emotional, and physical state. As I’ve been practising yoga for over four years I’ve learned how to control my breathing while practising yoga. In stress situations, I often start inhaling very long through my nose and exhale through my nose. Any yogi out there knows what I’m talking about here. This sort of breathing calms me immediately down and I incorporated this also now into my meditation sessions.

Another easy trick is to inhale a big deep breath and shrugging your shoulders up and then letting them drop on the exhale. This is a great way of calming down when you, for example, sit in an office and have an important meeting coming up etc.

  • Download the app Headspace, it's a brilliant app to learn to meditate and live mindfully. With short meditation sessions. It's basically a meditation guide, right in your pocket. I try and do a session every day.

  • Reading a book or a magazine and turning the phone off - it’s blissful! I'm currently loving 'Note to self' by Connor Franta and the wonderful collection of poems; 'Milk and honey' by Rupi Kaur

  • If you have the time then try and take a few moments before your yoga practice to sit and just be.

  • Thinking of 3 things you are grateful for every day and maybe even write those things down.

  • I love making a teapot full of fresh mint tea. I always try and enjoy that very first sip of tea.

  • Having a nap if you really need, or want one.

  • I love having a hot bath, especially in winter. Currently, I'm loving the REN Magnesium booster bath salts and a good bath oil like this gorgeous pomegranate noir one from Jo Malone. Also, I'm a big fan of the Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart Double Action Detox Peel Off Mask.

I hope you find some of my tips useful! Happy Friday xx Annabell
