MEET MAYA

THE 4 OF US are so excited to introduce jewellery designer and founder, Maya Magal. Maya will be joining us for the next month as a guest blogger to share her journey and behind the scenes of her stores with us!

Maya is based in London with three jewellery shops across the city. Follow her at @mayamagaljewellery for some jewellery-inspo and to keep up with all the latest from her workshops.

If I start from the beginning, I suppose the moment I can pinpoint where my journey and love for jewellery began was none other than at the heart of London’s jewellery district in Hatton Garden. Having explored my creative interests at Chelsea College of Art within textiles, I landed an apprenticeship with jeweller Tony Thomson during my studies as a sort of side venture. This is where I realised the difference between textiles and metals, and how making jewellery was a much more streamlined process that I found really exciting. I later worked with men’s accessories at Folk Clothing before ultimately going back to jewellery as head designer for the jewellery brand Miquella.

Fast forward to 2013, my passion for creating and designing jewellery led me to want to carve my own path in the industry and start something for myself. So I launched Maya Magal in a small private studio in Hatton Garden, back where it all started. My journey rapidly continued by opening my first shop in Islington, and later expanding with a second more central shop in St. Christopher’s Place. It’s honestly been so exciting to see the company grow into what it is today and how it keeps on growing year on year. My most recent achievement has been opening a new head office and third shop in the beautiful Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross, which we’ve all been really looking forward to running as a team.

A closer look at Maya Magal

I am mostly inspired by simple geometric shapes and designs, which is where my imagination often takes me. I also play on the combination and mixing of silver and gold that has become a signature look in many of my pieces since the very beginning. I really take pride in the fact that everything is handmade with the help of some amazing jewellers, which means we can also create one-of-a-kind bespoke pieces from requests. But more on that in a later entry!

It’s been amazing to be able to create my very own collections within the past few years, and I have also really enjoyed collaborating with other creatives, as it’s such a rewarding process for me personally. Earlier this year we put together the MMCollective Collaboration with five incredible journalists and editors that are also tremendously inspiring career women. The collection came together very organically as all of them personify exactly what I wanted Maya Magal to represent from the very start. It was truly exciting to watch the entire collection come to life as their own styles and personal touches were brought to each piece.

Every year brings on new projects and ideas, and that’s what feeds my passion for designing and creating. The most recent collection I’ve worked on has been with The Outnet, and it was great to be able to combine both fashion worlds and design a collection for the everyday outfit which we’re so excited to be able to share with you!
