#ImPerfect - NICOLA FOR ESPIRIT
Are you Perfect? NOBODY is.
Around this time last year, I was part of Esprit’s Fall/Winter #imperfect campaign which raised questions of perfection and imperfection and celebrated individuality.
The casting was held at Spotlight in Leicester Square and was unlike any other, in fact so was the shoot (you’ll soon find out why). The day started with a casting form to be filled out as normal. What was different about this casting though were the set of questions that followed. The one that I particularly remember was: “If you had to change one thing about yourself, what would it be?”. I could hear lots of the other models chatting amongst themselves debating what to say, I didn’t think too much about it at the time.
My turn came around and I quickly realised that I would have to answer these questions on screen, interview style, in front of a room full of people which I was of course not ready for! I was then asked the question again: “What would you most like to change about yourself?”. I laughed and responded with “I wish I had longer legs!”
They continued to ask me questions, (some were even a little bit cheeky) I think this was most likely to see a bit of your character and how you can handle being asked difficult or personal questions on camera, almost like a test! I left the casting and carried on with my day, putting it all to the back of my mind (which I have finally mastered after many years of practice!) :P
A week or so later, news came from my booker at MOT that I had booked the campaign. I was OVER THE MOON! The shoot turned out to be just as unique as the casting; the team who ran the day and the production crew were amazing. The shoot was at Spring Studios (London models know if you cast or shoot here – it’s generally for something pretty good , oh and the BEST lunches!). The photographer was NY based Christian MacDonald and Petros Peteohilios did make up.
The day started with an interview for the commercial part of the campaign - No off screen prep allowed! I was asked a bunch of questions like: “Would you consider yourself a confident person?” and “Do you think you’re perfect?”, along with some other more personal questions and even some sexual; which were quite funny but shocking at the same time. I guess they wanted to see our genuine reactions and how we approached it. Of course, every single person’s reaction to the questions were different and you can see this in the final video here, some people were lost for words! I mean the facial expressions for some say it all and then there were others who were not phased in the slightest.
The same goes for the photo shoot part, I was asked a series of questions AGAIN followed with a casual game of charades with the whole crew standing in front of me! Bear in mind, I was still being photographed at this point, all while doing ridiculous hand gestures. I honestly questioned what on earth was happening. I just wanted to tell them to stop asking me questions and let me just pose! Ha! But yea, I’m sure that wouldn't have gone down well. Beats your daily Ecom job that's for sure! Once the shots were coming through on the monitor I could totally get what they were trying to do and my mind was put at ease! It ended up being such a fun day and undoubtedly an unforgettable shoot.
When the shots were released I was so happy with the outcome and the whole day - which was also a little traumatic at times haha - was totally worth it!
Overall, I think the concept and the message was so well done with the focus being on the #imperfect hashtag that was used on all social media soon after the campaign was launched. You can see some of the released images below
It really is those little imperfections that make us who we are.
I think we are all a little guilty of comparing ourselves to others at some time in our life…
Embrace who you are rather than trying to be like everyone else.
I hope you enjoyed this post and stay tuned for some tips on staying healthy whilst on the go in the Big Apple.
