KIVA - EMPOWER PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD
During the christmas period there is a lot of talk about food, festivities, presents snow etc. Thats all well and good, but it is also important to remember that christmas is about love, being kind to one another and it's about giving rather than receiving. There are so many ways of giving, and no matter how big or small it will always be appreciated if the giving is genuin and thoughtful. One way to give is true micro loans, and KIVA is a great platform for this.
'KIVA is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of micro-finance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.' The great thing about micro-financed loads, and Kiva, is that you can lend small amounts of money to help people build up a business for them selves, or to get education and qualification for new jobs. As soon as the business is up and running and seeing a surplus, you get your loans back, and can then relend the money to someone new who needs a bit of kapital to get started. I (Sara) was given $100 in a KIVA account for christmas about 10 years ago now, and during those years I have made lots of small loans. I have been able to follow the lenders progress, and although it has sometimes taken a bit of time, I have always been paid back eventually. Not that it matters to much getting the money back, but it's nice to see that the loans are actually helping, and that I get the chance to relend the money to help more people. It's a small gesture, but when enough people join inn it actually does make a difference. Its truly one of the nicest gifts that I have been given, and it still gives me joy 10 years later.
